THE NECESSARY

LUXURY

Will you try to DIY? Here are some Home Truths...

It's tempting to try and do it yourself when it comes to finding a place to live in a new country. Here's what you need to do, if you want to try DIY...

  • Book flights for you (and perhaps your partner)

  • Take time away from work and/or arrange for weeks of childcare.

  • Book hotel accommodation for 2-4 weeks.

  • Hire a car.

  • Visit as many homes as you can in 2-4 weeks.

  • Check each home & surrounding area for suitability and hidden problems.

  • Make an offer on the home you want, or the next one, or the next one.

  • Negotiate a contract with the agent ensuring you understand local requirements.

  • Fly home.

  • Organise new home furnishings, lighting, linens, kitchen equipment etc...

  • Organise transition through customs of all the above.

  • Arrange pre-move cleaning from overseas.

  • Source local schools and/or clubs from overseas.

  • Engage all the best utility companies from overseas.

  • Engage any suppliers, contractors and/or staff from overseas.

  • Arrange pantry contents from overseas.

  • Arrange car hire for your arrival.

  • Fly back to the UK, again.

  • Find the car hire place & hire another car.

  • Drive to your new home with all your luggage.

  • Check the cleaning, home contents and pantry are as expected.

  • Check utilities have been connected.

  • Receive furniture sent from overseas.

  • Receive pets sent from overseas.

  • Join local clubs.

  • Find local supermarkets, amenities and leisure facilities.

  • Find local networks.

  • Shop around for a new car.

  • Negotiate a car purchase.

  • Register the car with the government.

  • Return the hire car to the nearest drop-off point.

  • Challenge any problems with agents, local suppliers or authorities.

  • Avoid violating new local customs and regulations.

Or you could try it from overseas...

  • Constantly browse the real-estate websites.

  • Hope the photographs you see, reflect reality.

  • Discover the downsides to the property location.

  • Get an agent to speak to you overseas.

  • Get an agent to trust you from overseas.

  • Organise ALL the other items above ...

Consider the cost of these things, in time, money and stress. Consider the cost of getting them wrong just because you're unfamiliar with local customs and you encounter unscrupulous agents and suppliers.

It seems like a luxury for someone else to take care of all this for you but, when you have family to take care of, work to do and your health to consider, it's really a necessity.

THE PERRINS FAMILY FROM SOUTH AFRICA

"Sally, you were instrumental..."

The prospect of moving to the UK with 2 small children under the age of 5 was very daunting for us. However, Sally Rule...was a huge help to us. My expectation was that Sally would show us a few rental properties and that would be it. However, Sally was more like a very friendly ambassador and friend and not so much of an estate agent. She went out of her way to show us schools in the areas we were interested in; showed us around the nearest town; helped us register at our local doctors surgery AND loaned us her very own camping beds and blankets whilst we awaited our shipment!! To add to this, she loaned our very active son, her scooter, so that he could quickly become part of the cul de sac group of boys and make friends. The cost of Sally's services, were worth every PENNY!!! WE NOT ONLY FOUND A HOME, IN AN IDEAL LOCATION, BUT ALSO HAD ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF OUR NEW

ENVIRONMENT AND THE ASSURANCE THAT SALLY WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO TALK TO, IF NEED BE, AT ANYTIME.

Sally was welcoming, friendly, and full of valuable knowledge that would've have taken me years to find out had it not been for her.A year or so later, we were in a position to buy our first home and thankfully, Sally directed us in the perfect direction. We had no idea as to how important the catchment area would be in the future for secondary schools, but Sally did. She steered us away from less pricey properties, with poorly rated secondary school prospects, and persuaded us to buy in the perfect spot for outstanding secondary schools. Several years down the line, we're still thankful for her priceless advice. Our boys are both attending an outstanding secondary school and are receiving the best of British education. One of the driving forces behind relocating was to secure excellent educational prospects for our children. Our children have that! Thank you, Sally. We're very grateful for the role you've played in our journey.
